A Journal

"I'm going to come back to West Virginia when this is over. There's something ancient and deeply-rooted in my soul. I like to think that I have left my ghost up one of those hollows, and I'll never really be able to leave for good until I find it. And I don't want to look for it, because I might find it and have to leave".----Breece D'J Pancake, in a letter to his mother.

Daniel Mutch

you can't be the sun because you
switch to dark and off.
if you are a walk in the trees then I am me.
you are invincible until you die so
science is maybe not worth it after all.

when my female dog pumps the other female
all night for love they are
interpreting the sun.

only the sun can take your heart
out with its night claws with the
speed and indifference of a checkout assistant.

only the sun lets the wind
bend your weird walls while we fuck.

only the sun says you'll never
feel welcome but you are free to dance.

Daniel's favorite souvenir should be songs but also a ski hat taken from his grandma who had borrowed it from his cousin years ago but is now in the company of a good friend in England because the most moving things are only ever a tiny percent physical so the feelings and emotions have a shape to grow from and forget.

Daniel Mutch is a dog person and the luckiest vegan ever because his heart loves animals but his stomach loves meat. His work has been published. He watched a small crane swinging holding a big roof in a hailstorm today. He was also in the storm but he's OK because he's heavy and featherless. He leaves his hood down until his face stings enough.
